Reclaiming Your Strength: Strategies for Overcoming Hurt from Loved Ones

As a career coach and a source of encouragement for many, I too encounter challenging days. Life is not always smooth sailing, and despite my efforts to remain positive, I experience hurt and anger just like anyone else.
Hurt is the emotional pain that arises when we feel let down by others. It's the sting that comes when someone speaks carelessly or behaves in a way that devalues us. For instance, imagine dedicating yourself to supporting a friend's goal, only to have your efforts dismissed or unappreciated. Such experiences can be impactful.
Anger is a natural reaction to feeling wronged or misunderstood. It typically emerges when our boundaries are violated or our expectations are not met. For example, continuous disregard for your feelings by someone you care deeply about can lead to frustration, resentment, and ultimately, anger.
So, how do we handle these emotions? What can we do when those we care about hurt us?
I opt to pray, meditate, and redirect my emotions. These practices assist me in recentering and viewing the situation from a new angle, which aids in my healing instead of clinging to the hurt or anger.
Here are several strategies I use for coping that you may also find beneficial:
Prayer or Meditation: Stepping back to connect with your inner self or with a higher power can bring tranquility and clarity amidst intense emotions.
Creative Outlet: Directing emotions into productive activities, such as journaling, content creation, or embarking on a new project, can transform energy into something constructive.
Physical Activity: Engaging in a walk, exercise, or dance can alleviate overwhelming feelings of hurt or anger. Physical movement helps in grounding oneself.
Discussion: Conversing with a confidant or coach can offer a fresh perspective. Sharing your feelings and considering another's point of view can pave the way for healing.
